CBD and its benefits – Part 2

In our three-part mini-series, we dive into nine medical conditions where CBD may be, or has already proven to be, beneficial.
In this second edition we look into its effect in treating anxiety, depression and sleep disorders.

Anxiety

A recent study undertaken before a simulated public speaking test saw that pre-treatment with 300mg of CBD significantly relieved anxiety in 57 healthy males.
With this being said, dosages of 150mg CBD and 600mg CBD did not make any difference to the men’s anxiety levels and as such the optimal dosage for relieving anxiety is as of this moment unknown.
It has been noted that beneficial effects on anxiety after taking CBD were also reported in an observational study where 21 patients out of 400 had anxiety, as well as in a large case study of 72 patients which saw the anxiety score of 57 of them decrease with the first month of CBD treatment.

Depression

When it comes to treating depression, more trials are still needed to concretely conclude whether it’s an effective form of treatment.
With this being said, animal studies have shown some effect of CBD at relieving depression, which has been attributed to its strong anti-stress effect after either acute or repeated administration.
Animal studies have also shown that CBD has a positive effect on serotonin levels.

Sleep disorders

Although there is a lack of concrete specific testing for CBD’s effectiveness in treating sleep disorders, it has been observed that users trialling CBD for other forms of research such as anxiety and pain relief have reported improved sleep.
In fact, 31% of people taking CBD for other conditions such as anxiety or non-cancer related pain reported improved sleep with CBD.

Moreover, in a case study of 72 people, 48 patients reported an improvement in sleep scores within the first month – It must be noted that this fluctuated over time.
Further trials of 300 mg of CBD in people with anxiety or depression did show however that the substance appeared to preserve sleep architecture, thus meaning it was unlikely to have any negative effects on the quality of sleep being achieved by the user.
